Research interests

Dr. Alati’s research and teaching interests are intertwined as his research informs his teaching and vice versa. He is currently conducting research in three core areas: 1) Canadian and comparative drug policy; 2) Canadian and comparative justice system reform; and 3) Canadian and comparative responses to gun and gang activity. Dr. Alati utilizes a comparative and socio-legal methodology. The comparative aspect places Canadian law and policy in context by informing it with analyses from comparable jurisdictions around the world. The socio-legal aspect blends traditional legal research (analyses of case law, legislation, other primary source materials) with sociological research methods (qualitative interviews with high-level experts in the field of study). This methodology allows his work to connect policy with practice, informing it with the real-world experience of those who implement the law “on the ground” on a day-to-day basis. Over the course of his career, Dr. Alati has engaged with: 1) national security lawyers; 2) cannabis industry experts; 3) Indigenous community leaders; 4) Alberta policymakers; 5) Alberta's legal profession; and 6) Alberta and national law enforcement members. He has a true passion for this type of research and welcomes collaboration across an array of sectors and professional practice. He is always striving for his work to extend beyond the pages of books, contributing to the betterment of his discipline, his students, his community and the broader civil societies of Alberta and Canada. He stands on the shoulders of those who have come before him and mentored him throughout his academic journey. | Comparative law, criminal justice, criminal law, constitutional law, Canadian and international drug policy; Canadian and international justice reform; Canadian and international gun and gangs research
