Research interests
My most recent published articles investigate Canadian-made science fiction, with explorations in embodied semiotics and mimesis in science fiction film/TV. Earlier qualitative research ranged widely from the role of yoga in voice training to 1920s expressionism in the arts and on (Marxist) aesthetics of nostalgia in the digital world. In 2014/15, I completed a major REB-approved mixed methods project (not published) on the recognition of emotion/affect in performance contexts, engaging fifty MacEwan students. Past teaching interests in multi-modal learning focused upon the use of performance and film in the classroom, the impacts of types of authority in the classroom, and more recently, on the role of affect, and the use of game structures in the inclusive classroom. | Rhetoric (classical/neoclassical/modern/postmodern), semiotics, aesthetics, performance studies, nonverbal/affective communication, public speaking, screenwriting/dramaturgy, Marxist and feminist critical theory, history of performing arts, military science fiction
