Research interests

The ability to correctly identify species, quantify genetic diversity and understand interspecific relationships are essential components of a sustainable conservation effort. Dr. McFadyen's research focuses on the application of molecular methods to understand evolutionary relationships and population structure of species experiencing natural or anthropogenic pressures. Currently, two projects with this thematic approach are being conducted. The first project involves the creation of a comprehensive DNA barcode library of orchids within the genra Dracula and Masdevallia, initially, to investigate their evolutionary relationships through the application of the chloroplast molecular markers. The second project sets out to examine the temporal and spatial population genetic structure, using microsatellite analysis, of various fish species in Lac La Biche. | Genetics, molecular biology, molecular phylogenetics, DNA barcoding, genetic diversity, population structure, orchids, freshwater fishes
