Recent developments in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have posed challenges in computer science (CS) education. GenAI tools can produce code to solve well-defined problems, typically given to first- and second-year students. Assessing student code submissions is problematic because the submitted code may not reflect students’ ability and understanding, and currently, no tools can accurately detect work produced by GenAI. We are interested in analyzing practical ways and best practices for integrating GenAI tools into CS education. GenAI tools can enhance students’ learning, creativity and productivity when used properly. Integrating GenAI into CS education requires analyzing GenAI tools’ strengths and limitations, revisiting assignment designs and assessment methods, and understanding the ethical and responsible use of GenAI. We aim to conduct a literature review summarizing current practices in GenAI integration in CS education, develop guidelines and recommendations for adopting GenAI into a CS curriculum and produce sample teaching materials for instructors. As the software industry expects CS graduates to use GenAI tools responsibly, this research project will help CS programs at MacEwan remain innovative and meet industry expectations. | Generative AI, CS education, information visualization, object-oriented software development
