Research interests

Dr. Sperano is particularly interested in co-design approaches that engage people with lived experience—including youth, caregivers and various other groups—as genuine partners in the design process. This work extends into trauma-informed design practices that center trust, safety and inclusion at every stage of the design process. Design and health is an area of interest, particularly at the intersection of co-design and care. A significant thread of her research explores the design of services for large organizations with a focus on citizen-centred approaches that account for the full systemic complexity of the contexts in which people live and seek support. She is also deeply invested in design methods and research practices: how designers conduct research and how those methods can become more participatory, inclusive, ethical and sustainable. Across these areas, pedagogy remains a constant concern: how designers are taught to think, research and practice, and increasingly, how artificial intelligence is shaping both design education and design practice. | Co-design, user experience design, interaction design, design research, design methods, service design, trauma-informed design, digital transformation, design ethics
