1. Reducing the cognitive load of learning through the use of multi-sensory learning experiences. Cognitive science has made considerable contributions to how we understand the pathways through which people interpret and process information. Utilizing the four cognitive processes involved in learning and memory (attention, encoding, storage and retrieval), we can adapt the way that educators present information to help students create stronger connections and associations to the course material. Through this research, we will examine how multi-sensory learning experiences can reduce the cognitive load and improve the encoding of information during the learning process. 2. Use of computer adaptive testing during summative student assessments. Recent advances in technology have accelerated the possibilities of incorporating artificial intelligence into the education system. Of these advances, computer adaptive testing (CAT) is of particular interest due to its ability to dynamically adjust exam questions in response to individual student answers. The application of CATs to administer summative assessments at the post-secondary level has the potential to deliver individualized tests to students, increasing the instructor’s accuracy in evaluating student understanding of course material. This research project will examine and evaluate the application of CAT programs during introductory chemistry courses. | Organic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education
