Research interests
My scholarship has previously focused on British twentieth-century writers like J. R. R. Tolkien, W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, and W. H. Auden. What unites these projects has been an interest in how literatures of different genres and forms express the utopian or millenarian impulse and how we, as cultures/societies/individuals, conceptualize the future. From that debate about the future, a spectrum ranging from apocalyptic utopia to apocalyptic dystopia can be sketched, and works of art explored through their expression of the desire for a better world. Most recently, I have been exploring the way writers of the Anglo-Welsh border use history and folk horror and the degree to which any science fiction can be considered "Hard SF". | Utopia/dystopia, apocalypse, catastrophe and millenarianism in literature, modernism, poetry and popular music, film and media studies, fantasy, science fiction, Tolkien studies.
