Born and raised in a French-speaking community in Northern Alberta in the shadow of the historical fur economy, he has researched ethnicity and nationalism, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia. He has studied the history of French-speaking populations in Western North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. This past decade, he has studied Métis ethnogenesis and has published a number of books examining historical Métis communities. Dr. Bouchard served as President of the Canadian Anthropology Society and is currently a co-investigator in a SSHRC-funded research projects examining the history and ethnogenesis of the Acadian Métis.
