Research interests

Dr. Refaie’s research is driven by a deep interest in social justice and how experiences of disadvantage and (un)fairness shape our behaviour at work and in society. While many studies focus on systemic inequalities, his work looks at the personal side: how people feel and respond when they encounter what they perceive as injustice in their own lives. His research has found that perceived inequalities are equally if not more important than objective inequalities in predicting how an individual will respond to disadvantage. He is particularly interested in how individuals perceiving a disadvantage cope with these experiences in different ways. For example, when someone realizes a colleague excels at a task they struggle with, they might respond by seeking training to improve or by feeling threatened. Dr. Refaie also explores how these experiences affect mental health including feeling undervalued or excluded, lower commitment or even feelings of resentment towards employers and colleagues. He hopes that, through his research, organizations can better understand how managing these disadvantaged experiences can create a safer, respectful and ultimately more productive workplace. | Organizational behaviour, risk, needs, negotiation
