Research interests
Although Dr. Grewal's research takes a comparative approach to the study of Urdu literature (particularly the ghazal), her teaching has primarily centered around hip hop. What unites these two disparate interests is the ways in which both hip hop and the ghazal have been mobilized to resist social/colonial oppression, especially via transgressive language use, signifying wordplay and dynamic oral performance. She is also interested in theories of translation and poetics as they apply to both of these genres. Finally, both Dr. Grewal's research and teaching interests center around how certain genres of literature become "canonical" and/or "mainstream," as well as the politics of that canonization. | South Asian literature (with particular focus on Urdu), poetics and lyric theory, the Ghazal, literary history, canonization, translation and translation theory, comparative and world literature, theories of race and racism, hip hop, oral performance, globalization and transnationalism, diaspora studies
