Research interests

Irwin's teaching and scholarly interests are grounded in women’s health, maternal-child nursing, global health and the advancement of inclusive, learner-centred nursing education. Across her clinical and academic career, she has been deeply inspired by the opportunity to support individuals and families during some of the most significant moments in their lives, particularly in labour and delivery, neonatal care and community-based health settings. A central focus of her work is nursing mentorship and student development. She is passionate about creating supportive learning environments where students feel safe to ask questions, build confidence and grow into capable and reflective practitioners. This commitment to mentorship extends into both clinical and simulation-based education, where she aims to bridge theory and practice through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Simulation education is a key area of interest as it offers a powerful way for students to develop clinical judgment, teamwork and communication skills in a safe and structured environment. She is continually inspired by how simulation supports reflection and prepares learners for real-world practice. Her interests in global, Indigenous and First Nations health continue to shape her approach to teaching and care with a strong emphasis on health promotion and culturally safe practice. She is also increasingly interested in exploring these areas through a planetary health lens with a desire to further research how global and environmental determinants influence maternal and child health outcomes and nursing practice. Ultimately, her work is guided by a commitment to preparing compassionate, competent nurses ready to meet the evolving needs of diverse populations locally and globally. | Women’s health, maternal-child health, global health, planetary health, Indigenous health, nursing mentorship, student mentorship, clinical education, simulation, inclusive learning environments
