Research interests

Most of Will's teaching and research is centred around his own personal curiosity. He gets interested in topics because he don't understand them, then tries to answer his own personal questions--things like, How do specific environments shape the way we act? Why do people interact in specific ways in these settings? And, how do these interactions shape peoples' lives and experiences, both in and outside of those settings? Most of Will's work experience has taken place inside prisons--which means that he has primarily asked questions about the social dynamics of prison. His research centres on trying to answer questions like, "What does it mean to be a father in prison?" "How do prison subcultures influence ideologically extreme messages?", and "What influence do workplace cultures have on prison operations?" He designs classes and research around questions like this, and his basic teaching philosophy is that he wants his students to develop the skills they need to identify, ask and comprehensively answer interesting questions about crime and criminology. | Prisons, correctional officers, prison work, drugs, radicalization and ideologically motivated violent extremism, gangs, incarcerated parenthood
